Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim cut a frustrated figure when he addressed the press a day ahead of his team’s Premier League clash vs Burnley on Saturday. The 40-year-old also said that sometimes he wants to even quit the club. But he also added that sometimes he also wishes to remain there for the next 20 years.
“Sometimes I hate my players; sometimes I love my players. This is my way of doing things. Sometimes, I want to quit, sometimes I want to be here for 20 years. Sometimes I want to be with my players, sometimes I don’t want to be with them. Sometimes, I hate my kids. I am going to be like that, that is not going to change,” Amorim said.
The United coach was clearly livid after his side lost to the 4th division side Grimsby Town to get eliminated from the Carabao Cup in just the second round on Wednesday.
“The best players lose because a team can win against any group of players,” an angry Amorim had said then, “and I think the (United) team and the players spoke really loud today, so that’s it. We lost, the best team won. We were completely lost and it’s hard to explain and that’s why I think they spoke really loud,” he said.
United’s grim(sby) defeat
The loss to Grimsby was the latest in a string of underwhelming performances from United since the season started. They lost to Arsenal 1-0 in the season opener, squandered a lead at Fulham to end the match at 1-1 and them completely lost the plot against Grimsby.
Grimsby won 12-11 on penalties with United new recruit Bryan Mbeumo missing the decisive kick. United were trailing 2-0 at halftime before goals by Mbeumo and Harry Maguire leveled the score at 2-2 and sent the game into penalty shootout at the modest Blundell Park on England’s east coast, a stadium with just a 9,000-seat capacity.
