Manchester United break tradition with unveiling of 2026/27 home kit
Manchester United F.C. have officially unveiled their new home kit for the 2026/27 season, with the club also confirming that the shirt will be worn before the current campaign has even finished in a break from long-standing tradition at Old Trafford. The new strip, inspired by some of United’s iconic kits from the 1970s, will make its first appearance this weekend before returning again for the final day of the season as the club prepares for a return to the Champions League.
United reveal retro-inspired design with nod to 1977 FA Cup winners
Supporters first caught sight of the new shirt on Wednesday when a giant promotional banner appeared outside Old Trafford overlooking the stadium forecourt. The kit was then officially released for sale through Fanatics and other retailers including Kitbag, Sports Direct and the official Manchester United store, with adult shirts starting at £85 and children’s versions beginning at £55. Adidas designed the shirt around a clean red base combined with black-and-white detailing, while the classic three stripes return along the sleeves as part of the manufacturer’s modern template.
Although understated at first glance, the design heavily references the shirts worn by United during the mid-1970s, particularly the kit used during the club’s 1976/77 FA Cup-winning season under Tommy Docherty. That side famously defeated rivals Liverpool F.C. 2-1 in the FA Cup final, with all three goals arriving during a chaotic four-minute spell in the second half.
The new shirt has been released as part of the 50th anniversary tribute to that triumph. The original Admiral shirts from that era featured striped polo collars and cuffs, elements Adidas have now reworked into a more contemporary design. Narrow striping appears on both the fold-over collar and sleeve cuffs, while a small “United” banner has been added to the back of the shirt above player names. In a statement accompanying the launch, Adidas said: “Inspired by the 1970s, a clean red base allows the iconic polo collar and striped cuffs to take centre stage, bringing a refined and unmistakably United look back to the pitch. “The collar execution, combined with subtle striping details, references the kits worn during the club’s FA Cup triumph in 1977 — marking the 50th anniversary of that historic moment. “This connection to the past is balanced with a contemporary construction, creating a jersey that feels both nostalgic and progressive.” The full kit is completed with white shorts and black socks, maintaining the club’s traditional colour palette.
New technology and Champions League return boost Adidas deal
The shirt also incorporates Adidas’ latest CLIMACOOL+ technology, designed to improve ventilation and moisture management for players during matches. According to the manufacturer, the jersey includes perforated three-stripe tape and specially positioned mesh zones intended to provide improved breathability while helping players remain drier for longer periods.
The new campaign will also see Manchester United return to the Champions League, which restores Adidas payments within the club’s sponsorship agreement to full levels. United’s contract with Adidas reportedly includes a £10 million deduction during seasons in which the club fails to qualify for the Champions League, meaning their return to Europe’s top competition carries additional financial importance beyond football alone.
United to wear next season’s kit before current campaign ends
The new shirt will receive its first official outing on Saturday when Manchester United Women wear it against Chelsea F.C. Women at Stamford Bridge in their final Women’s Super League match of the season. Michael Carrick’s men’s side will then debut it at Old Trafford on Sunday against Nottingham Forest F.C.. The club are also expected to wear the strip again on the final day of the campaign away to Brighton. That decision marks a notable shift for United, who have traditionally waited until the beginning of a new season before unveiling and wearing their next home shirt.
In recent years, clubs such as Arsenal F.C., Liverpool F.C.
and Chelsea F.C. have increasingly introduced next season’s kits during the closing weeks of the current campaign, but this will be the first time Manchester United adopt the same approach. The Nottingham Forest fixture could also carry added significance as it may become the final Old Trafford appearance for Brazilian midfielder Casemiro in a United shirt.
Fans split over first impressions
Supporters quickly reacted across social media following the official launch, with opinions divided over the minimalist retro-inspired look.
One fan wrote on X: “Beautiful. Champions League batch will look wonderful on it.” Another supporter added: “I like this. Looks clean and slick.” Not everyone was fully convinced by the design, however, with one fan joking: “Took the designer at Adidas about 10 minutes to come up with this eh?” Another United supporter still backed the overall aesthetic, writing: “Clean kit. Manchester United always hits different in red.”
