A massive fire swept through the Shastri Park furniture market in northeast Delhi late on Friday night, destroying several shops and causing losses running into lakhs of rupees, officials from the Delhi Fire Service (DFS) said on Saturday. The incident sparked anger among local residents, some of whom allegedly pelted stones at fire tenders over what they claimed was a delayed response.

According to the DFS, the first call reporting the blaze was received at around 11:57 pm. The fire broke out in the furniture market located near the New Seelampur metro station and spread rapidly due to the presence of highly combustible materials, a DFS official said.

As the flames raged, tensions escalated at the scene. At around 12:50 am, police assistance was requested after some members of the public allegedly hurled stones at the firefighting teams during the operation.
