Chandigarh: The municipal corporation’s proposal to recruit over 270 employees through direct recruitment has been pending with the UT administration for more than two months, with no final decision yet.Sources said the proposal was initially examined by the local bodies department and has now been forwarded to the personnel department for a decision.MC officials maintained they had proposed Panjab University (PU) as the recruitment agency, as done in the past. “The matter is with the administration. Only after a decision is communicated can the process move forward,” sources said. However, UT administration sources indicated that the proposal is being closely scrutinised, particularly the rationale behind engaging PU for conducting recruitment exams.
“The MC’s view has been sought, and a final decision will be taken after evaluating all aspects,” sources said. The delay comes amid an acute staff shortage in the civic body, which is currently operating with nearly 60% fewer regular employees than its sanctioned strength. The corporation plans to fill more than 270 posts on a permanent basis, including 118 clerks, 79 firemen, 33 drivers, 20 junior engineers, and two sub-divisional engineers. Other posts include sub-inspectors for the enforcement wing, draftsmen and stenotypists.Officials said expediting recruitment is crucial to addressing manpower gaps across key departments.
