Shillong: Governor Chandrashekhar H Vijayashankar said the govt is committed to maintaining peace and security along the Assam-Meghalaya boundary and the international border with Bangladesh.“Timely intervention by the govt in Lapangap village, West Jaintia Hills district, prevented the situation from any further escalation, due to which our farmers were able to complete the harvest of their crops,” he said, referring to last year’s skirmishes along the inter-state boundary with Assam.On the Indo-Bangladesh border, Vijayashankar said, “We are also committed to securing the Indo-Bangladesh border and are monitoring the situation, in close coordination with BSF.

We have also directed Deputy Commissioner to activate the Village Defense Parties (VDPs) to improve security around the international border,” during his Republic Day speech after unfurling the national flag at the Polo Grounds.He said, “The establishment of the Anti-Terror Squad in Meghalaya Police marks a decisive step to counter terror threats with precision and professionalism.”On forensic upgrades, he said, “The state has made significant progress in upgrading the forensic infrastructure with the establishment of a DNA unit, enabling advanced examinations locally, eliminating outsourcing delays, and accelerating the pursuit of justice.

In addition, the govt has sanctioned the creation of Cyber Forensic Science Unit in the Directorate of Forensic Science to confront the rising menace of cyber fraud,” he informed.On recruitment, he said, “We are also in the final stages of completing the recruitment of 3,000 police personnel by February this year,” the governor said.Reviewing the past year, Vijayashankar said, “During the last year, the overall law and order situation in the state was peaceful. In the past year, various festivals of the state, including national day celebrations, were conducted peacefully,” he said.He added, “We take this opportunity to salute the unwavering dedication and sacrifices of our armed forces, paramilitary forces, and the Meghalaya Police. Their vigilant efforts ensure our safety and security.”
