Manchester United’s interim head coach, Michael Carrick, has finally received an official intimation from the club to continue in his position for the next two years after several months of discussion, which suggested that the interim coach shouldn’t be continued.

Senior United officials have identified former Red Devils midfielder Carrick as the preferred candidate for the job. Speaking at a press conference on Friday, he, who has been serving as caretaker manager since January, said that clarity over his future should come ‘pretty soon’.

An announcement before Sunday’s final home match of the season against Nottingham Forest hasn’t been ruled out, with the proposed contract including an option for an extra year.

“The future for me is going to be decided pretty soon. We knew that," Carrick said while speaking to the media.

The continued talks, after chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox recommended Carrick to minority owner Jim Ratcliffe, suggest his appointment as Ruben Amorim’s permanent successor is only a matter of time.

Most footballers have backed Carrick for the role, while many fans also believe the former England midfielder has earned the job after winning 10 of his 15 league matches and bagging Champions League qualification for next season.

United need just one point from their final two games to seal third place, while Carrick has also been shortlisted for the league’s Manager of the Season award.

Carrick confirmed that 34-year-old Brazil midfielder Casemiro will be available for his Old Trafford farewell and said that he plans to continue the tradition begun by former boss Alex Ferguson by addressing supporters after the Forest game.

“That is important anyway. The supporters are a massive part of this club. We thank them for the season, the last four months for me personally. Regardless of that, for what we have gone through and that connection, which the players have felt, I need to thank the fans for that," Carrick said.
