The Tripura Police Friday detained two people in connection with the rape of a minor girl in Gomati district. One of the detainees is a relative of the survivor.

According to the police, the 16-year-old girl was raped when she visited the in-laws of her brother earlier this month. Her brother’s brother-in-law took her in a vehicle to a railway station in the district on Thursday. The driver then allegedly raped the girl inside the car, while her brother’s brother-in-law was outside the vehicle.

“A complaint came to us today (Friday), after which a case was lodged against them. Both the accused persons were brought to the police station. Interrogation is going on,” said a policeman.

The police have lodged a case under Sections 64(1), 61(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Section 4 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act.

Earlier this month, a man was convicted of raping a minor school student several times in Unakoti district and was sentenced to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment.

In another such incident this month, the police arrested a person for allegedly raping an 11-year-old girl in West Tripura district.

Last month, a 17-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a resident of her village while she was going to a grocery shop in Tripura’s Khowai district.
