Mitsubishi Electric India, a Japanese electrical and electronic equipment maker, opened its new air conditioner and compressor manufacturing unit at Gummidipoondi near Chennai on Friday.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. K. Stalin launched the facility virtually from the Secretariat. The unit is located on the Mahindra Origins campus. The project has come up on an investment of ₹2,100 crore. This is Mitsubishi Electric India’s second manufacturing unit in India. The company opened its Factory Automation Systems plant in Pune in 2023.

Spread over 210,000 square metres, the Gummidipoondi facility has an annual production capacity of 3,00,000 indoor and outdoor room air conditioner and 6,50,000 compressor units. Besides creating over 2,100 direct and indirect jobs, the facility is expected to strengthen the regional supplier ecosystem by encouraging local sourcing of components, developing technical capabilities among partners, and facilitating skills development in line with global manufacturing standards.

The company said that by manufacturing these products domestically, Mitsubishi Electric India aims to reduce import dependence, support the development of a self-reliant HVAC manufacturing ecosystem, and contribute to India’s broader manufacturing ambitions.

Tamil Nadu Minister for Industries T.R.B. Rajaa said the State leads the country with around 40,000 factories. “Tamil Nadu is growing at 11.19%, the only State registering a double-digit growth,” he said. It produces 31% of India’s electronics items and accounts for 41% of India’s electronic exports.

Atsushi Takase, managing director, Mitsubishi Electric India, said, “India is witnessing a rapid growth in energy-efficient and high-quality air-conditioning solutions. This facility will support this growing demand through local manufacturing, while enabling us to respond faster to customer needs, strengthen quality control, and ensure sustainable operations.”

The company would position India as a core hub within Mitsubishi Electric’s global air conditioning business, he said, adding that the investment underscored its long-term commitment to India and Tamil Nadu in particular.
