Congress leader and Sivaganga MP Karti Chidambaram has reacted to alleged references to him in the recently released film ‘Dhurandhar’, dismissing the speculation as a result of people confusing fiction with reality and viral misinformation.
Speaking in a podcast with news agency ANI, Chidambaram said he has not yet watched the film but has been informed that a character resembling him appears in it.
“No, I haven’t watched it. But I’ve been told that I have a cameo there," he said, adding that the film is nearly three hours long and he may eventually watch it during flights.
Taking a light-hearted tone, the Congress MP joked that the filmmakers should have consulted him before portraying such a character.
“I hope the producer had called me and asked whom they should cast for my cameo. I would have given some suggestions," he remarked.
When asked who he would choose to play him on screen, Chidambaram replied humorously, “[Irish actor] Pierce Brosnan, maybe."
Asked about who could portray his father, former Union minister P Chidambaram, he added, “I don’t know, maybe [retired English actor] Michael Caine or somebody like that."
Responding to the wider controversy and online discussions linking the film’s fictional political subplot to real-life figures, Chidambaram questioned the basis of such claims.
“If people can mix up fact, fiction and WhatsApp forwards, what can I do? If you really think something like this happened, shouldn’t the government of India have some records?" he said.
He criticised the growing influence of misinformation circulated through messaging platforms, arguing that many people struggle to distinguish verified facts from fabricated narratives.
“Unfortunately, thanks to WhatsApp, people can’t sift through fact and fiction, and everything merges in this ‘maya’ world. Now with Artificial Intelligence, it’s only going to get worse, but so be it," he said.
Mocking long-standing viral claims about his alleged overseas assets, the Congress MP added, “They also say that I have 24 properties in 25 countries. That is only possible if one property is on the border of two countries. How can I have 24 properties in 25 countries?"
He also referred to another widely circulated social media claim about vegetables supposedly grown at his residence.
“There is a very famous WhatsApp forward that claims we grow cauliflower in balconies. Actually, I want to correct that, we grow asparagus, not cauliflower. That is what we grow in the balconies, in pots," he said.
CHIDAMBARAM’s ALLGED REFERENCE IN MOVIE ‘DHURANDHAR’
In Dhurandhar (2025), references to P Chidambaram and Karti Chidambaram are not explicit portrayals or named characters but are seen by some viewers as political insinuations embedded within a fictional subplot involving counterfeit Indian currency and an alleged compromised government deal.
The film depicts an unnamed union minister signing a currency-related agreement abroad around 2008 and travelling with his son, after which intelligence officials suspect a national-security breach linked to fake currency operations.
The film does not name any real individual, and the narrative remains fictional.
However, similarities in timeline and the “minister and son" element led sections of audiences and online commentators to interpret the characters as resembling the Chidambaram father-son duo.
