Mizoram Police seize Rs 31cr worth of crystal meth, arrest Myanmar national

Aizawl: Police officials in Mizoram’s Champhai district, bordering Myanmar, have seized 10.259kg of crystal meth and 145g of heroin worth over Rs 31.06 crore. A Myanmar national was arrested for allegedly trafficking drugs across the border, a senior Champhai police officer said on Saturday.According to police, personnel from Zokhawthar police station intercepted a suspicious van bearing an Aizawl registration number while patrolling along the India-Myanmar border on Friday. The vehicle, driven by Zaena (52), a native of Lamzang village in Myanmar’s Chin State and currently residing in Khawmawi, was searched.From the left front fender, officers recovered packages of crystal methamphetamine.

In addition, 12 soap cases containing heroin weighing 145g were also seized.The contraband, along with the van and the accused’s mobile phone, was confiscated. A case has been registered under Sections 22(c)/21(b)/25 of the Narcotic Drugs & Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985, read with Section 21 of the Immigration & Foreigners Act, 2025. Investigations are underway to identify others involved.Official records show that Mizoram Police, in coordination with the Assam Rifles and BSF, seized narcotics worth over Rs 1,047 crore during the 2025-26 fiscal year.

The state excise and narcotics department also confiscated 487.128kg of drugs and arrested 652 traffickers during the same period.Meanwhile, Assam Rifles personnel deployed along the Mizoram-Myanmar border seized 3.952kg of methamphetamine (80,000 tablets) in Lawngtlai district on Friday. Four suspects — one Indian and three Myanmar nationals — were intercepted while travelling by boat across the Chhimtuipui river near Kakichhuha village.The arrested persons were identified as Lalramliana (40) of Bungtlang, Lawngtlai district, and Myanmar nationals Chai Maung Thein (17), Than Laing (17), and Than Lai Gwon (15). They were handed over to Bungtlang police station along with the seized narcotics for further legal proceedings.
