Colombian superstar James Rodriguez put pen to paper on a short-term contract with MLS side Minnesota United ahead of the 2026 World Cup, the side announced on Friday.

The 34-year-old former Real Madrid midfielder, who last played for Mexican side Leon, has a guaranteed contract through June, with a team option extending to December.

“I’m very happy for this new chapter in my life," Rodriguez said following the move.

“I hope to be at my best so I can bring joy to this city and to all the people who are putting their faith in me," the  former Bayern Munich star continued.

“I’m looking forward to meeting all the passionate Minnesota fans because I’m also a passionate player who wants to give everything on the field and always wants to win," the Colombian added.

The Loons finished fourth in the Western Conference last year with a 16-8 record and 10 draws, but fell in the playoff quarter-finals.

“James is a player whose quality, vision, and experience at the highest levels of the game are unquestioned," United chief soccer officer and sporting director Khaled El-Ahmad said.

“We’re excited to add his creativity and football intelligence to our group. At the same time, this move is about collective strength, not placing everything on one individual," he continued.

“We believe that within our structure and culture, James can add an important dimension to the team," El-Ahmad added.
