Guwahati: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, winding up his election campaign in Assam on Monday, launched a blistering attack on the Gandhi family and Congress, accusing them of corruption, dynastic politics, and siding with Pakistan.Addressing rallies in Barpeta, Hojai, and Dibrugarh — just a day before the silence period begins at 5pm Tuesday — Modi said, “The first family of Congress is the most corrupt in the country, indulging in scams of huge proportions and currently out on bail. Congress can do only two things — tell lies and indulge in corruption.”Taking a dig at Rahul Gandhi’s “mohabbat ki dukaan” slogan, Modi said Congress was nothing but a “mithya ki dukaan” (shop of lies) and a symbol of “apmaan” (insult).“There is another family in Assam, and both families are making false promises ahead of the polls,” he said, in an apparent reference to Congress deputy leader in the Lok Sabha, Gaurav Gogoi, who also heads the party’s state unit.Modi accused the Gandhi family of occupying prime land in Delhi. “Congress alleges that BJP acquires land from people, but they don’t talk about the prime lands in Delhi held under the names of National Herald, Rajiv Gandhi Charitable Trust, and others,” he said.
He said BJP acquired land for state’s development, benefiting all sections of society. “They are now talking about land that has shifted from beneath their feet,” he added.Modi then tore into Congress, saying that while his govt carried out “Operation Sindoor”, Congress continued to “sing to the tune of Pakistan”.He alleged that during the 2016 surgical strikes and the 2025 operation, Congress had always echoed Pakistan’s agenda.
“This Pakistan connection always weighs heavily on the country, and we can never allow that,” he said. The PM also accused Congress of neglecting the armed forces by delaying One Rank, One Pension for decades. “BJP govt ensured justice for those who protect the nation. So far, Rs 1.24 lakh crore has been disbursed to veterans,” he said.Highlighting development under BJP rule, Modi pointed to the emergency landing facility at Moran, where fighter jets can now land on highways.
He accused Congress of neglecting upper Assam and the Barak Valley and claimed BJP had granted land rights to tea garden workers. “During my last visit to Dibrugarh, I interacted with women tea garden workers, but to insult me, they made fun of their dress and culture,” he said.Modi said Congress had aided infiltrators for vote-bank politics, allowing them to settle on lands belonging to sattras, temples, tribal communities, and Kaziranga National Park.
“It is BJP that is freeing these lands from encroachers and giving land rights to indigenous people,” he said.On national issues, Modi said the govt was working to shield citizens from the impact of the West Asia conflict. He also announced that the 33% reservation for women in Parliament would be implemented from the 2029 Lok Sabha elections. “A special session of Parliament has been convened on April 16 to discuss the issue.
Women in Assam should urge all parties to ensure the bill’s passage,” he said.Listing welfare measures, Modi said the minimum support price for paddy had risen from Rs 1,300 per quintal in 2013 to Rs 2,370 now. He said Assam’s famed Joha rice is being exported to Europe. “Farmers’ income is increasing, and BJP govt is transferring money directly to their bank accounts, bypassing middlemen,” he said.Asserting that peace and development in Assam must continue, Modi urged voters to keep Congress out. Polling for Assam’s 126 assembly constituencies will be held on April 9, with counting on May 4.
