The Mohan Majhi Government is set to plant 75 lakh saplings across Odisha in a single day on September 17 to mark Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 75th birthday.

Chairing a preparatory meeting, Chief Minister Majhi said the massive plantation drive would be Odisha’s gift to the Prime Minister, acknowledging his contributions to the nation and his special commitment to the State’s development.

“This will be a record-breaking effort under the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign, launched by the Prime Minister last year. On his last birthday, Modiji visited Odisha and launched the Subhadra Yojana in honour of our mothers. This year, we will celebrate his 75th birthday by planting 75 lakh trees in a single day,” he said.

The campaign’s second edition, currently underway from June 5 to September 30, aims to plant at least 7.5 crore saplings across the State. Last year, Odisha surpassed its target by planting 6.72 crore trees, ranking fourth nationally.

While the Forest and Environment department and Agriculture and Farmers’ Empowerment departments will lead the campaign, the Chief Minister stressed the need for wider public participation.

“All government departments, PSUs, NGOs, youth organisations, and voluntary groups must be roped in. Panchayats, schools, colleges, and self-help groups will play key roles,” he said.

To strengthen outreach, the government will launch an awareness campaign to position the initiative not just as a government programme but a people’s movement for environmental protection.

Photographs and data from the plantation drive will be uploaded on the Meri Life portal. Panchayat officials will be tasked with monitoring progress and expediting implementation in rural areas.

The CM also emphasised planting of climate-resilient and fruit-bearing species, tailored to local ecological conditions.
