Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy predicted that it would be Congress leader Rahul Gandhi who would unseat Prime Minister Narendra Modi, whom neither Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) nor former Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee could remove from the Prime Minister’s chair.

“Rahul Gandhi will do it in the next elections,” he declared while speaking at a conclave on “Constitutional Challenges: Perspectives and Pathways”, organised by the All India Congress Committee (AICC) at Vigyan Bhavan in Delhi on Saturday (August 2, 2025).

Referring to BJP MP Nishikant Dubey’s claims, Mr. Reddy pointed out that even the MP admitted BJP wouldn’t win more than 150 seats without Modi. “He should note it in his diary: in the next election, under Rahul Gandhi’s leadership, Congress will ensure BJP doesn’t cross 150 seats,” he asserted.

Mr. Reddy called upon all Congress workers and supporters to join the battle to unseat Mr. Modi and protect the Constitution. “We are fighting to bring social justice for OBCs, to ensure 42% reservations, and to conduct caste census across the country,” he said.

He recalled that during the Bharat Jodo Yatra, Rahul Gandhi had promised a caste census in Telangana. “As a result, the people of Telangana opened their hearts for him. We kept that promise and conducted the caste census in Telangana. We gave the nation the Telangana model,” he said.

Stating that sacrifice was in the DNA of the Gandhi family, Mr. Reddy recalled how former Congress president Sonia Gandhi refused the Prime Minister’s post in 2004. She chose a tall leader like Manmohan Singh. “Even when offered the post of President, she stepped aside and endorsed Pranab Mukherjee,” he said.

Similarly, Rahul Gandhi, too, turned down opportunities to become a minister or Prime Minister in 2004 and 2009, choosing instead to work as an ordinary party worker for the last 25 years for the cause of the poor, Dalits, Adivasis, OBCs, and social justice, he said.

The Chief Minister drew a contrast with Prime Minister Modi, stating, “Since 2001, Modi has never stepped away from power, from being Gujarat Chief Minister to now Prime Minister. Even when RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat suggested that leaders above 75 should step down, Modi refused. Why do the rules that applied to Advani and Murli Manohar Joshi not apply to Modi?” he asked.

Mr. Reddy reminded the audience that the Congress Party’s association with India was the oldest, leading the Indian Independence struggle. Other parties that were not involved with India emotionally or in development aspects are now questioning Congress party’s contribution. BJP needs to be reminded of this historical truth, he said.
