US President Donald Trump on Monday claimed that Iran had lost its navy, air force, air defence systems and top military commanders, as he said Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei was “90% gone". Speaking in an interview with Fox News, Trump said Iran’s military capabilities had been severely weakened during the conflict.
“They have no navy. They have no air force. It’s all gone. Their anti-aircraft is gone. Their leaders have all been killed," Trump said.
Trump Says Iran’s ‘Best Leaders’ Are Gone
Trump also claimed that Iran had lost its most senior leaders in the war.
“Their best leaders have been killed. They’re gone. Khomeini is gone," he said, apparently referring to late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed during the first wave of US-Israeli strikes on Iran in late February.
“His son is 90% gone," Trump added, referring to Mojtaba Khamenei, who succeeded his father as Iran’s Supreme Leader.
Mojtaba Khamenei has reportedly been recovering from injuries sustained in an airstrike and was absent from his father’s funeral ceremonies held this month in Iran and Iraq.
Remarks Come Amid Fresh US-Iran Strikes
Trump’s remarks came as US and Iranian forces exchanged heavy missile and drone attacks over the weekend and on Monday.
The US president also announced that Washington was reinstating its blockade on Iran and said the Strait of Hormuz would remain open “with or without Iran". Trump further said the US would seek reimbursement equal to 20 per cent of the value of cargo passing through the strategic waterway for providing security.
“We’re taking over the Strait. They have nothing… yesterday, they had an 11-hour meeting… and everything was agreed to yesterday, and they leave the room, and then they call back and they say, ‘we had to make a couple of changes’… for 47 years, they’ve been tapping people along… this should’ve been done 47 years ago," Trump told Fox News.
