In a dramatic twist to a high-profile international assassination probe, the body of the prime suspect wanted for the targeted bombing of Ukrainian business tycoon Vadym Yermolaiev in Monaco was discovered by Ukraine’s security services on Tuesday.

The deceased woman, identified by Interpol as Anastasiia Berezovska, was found with fatal gunshot wounds to her head. Ukraine’s military intelligence agency has since acknowledged that the killing was orchestrated with the logistical assistance of a former law enforcement officer.

According to an official statement from the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), quoted by the Associated Press, the rogue former officer undertook the execution as a personal initiative and had not briefed his former superiors on the plot.

The Monaco Bombing: Target Tycoon

The international manhunt for Berezovska began following a brazen June 29 bomb attack in the wealthy, sovereign city-state of Monaco. The blast targeted Vadym Yermolaiev, a prominent business tycoon known to harbour links with Russia.

The explosion, which tore through a public sector of the tax-haven principality, also targeted Yermolaiev’s family. While Yermolaiev was killed, the attack injured three others, including a child.

The rare act of violence deeply rattled the sovereign city-state, prompting Prince Albert II of Monaco to condemn the explosion as “an odious act" while mobilising all public services to reinforce localised security.

Following the attack, Interpol deployed a global Red Notice for Berezovska on its portal, listing charges of attempted murder, criminal conspiracy, and detonating an explosive device in a public place. Following Tuesday’s developments, Interpol stated it had no immediate comment but would formally dissolve the Red Notice once requested by Monaco authorities.

Torture Chamber & Cryptic Paper Trails

The breakthrough in locating Berezovska came as the SBU tracked a complex digital financial trail. Investigators zeroed in on two male suspects who had systematically transferred fiat currency and cryptocurrency across multiple international bank accounts to Berezovska.

During a raid on the residence of the former law enforcement officer implicated in the plot, SBU agents uncovered a hidden basement specifically outfitted to resemble a torture chamber.

Berezovska’s body was ultimately exhumed during a law enforcement reconstruction of the crime scene, guided by the explicit testimony of one of the detained financial couriers. SBU forensic teams recovered pistol casings directly from the site. Both financial suspects have been formally detained on suspicion of premeditated murder.

The SBU confirmed it has handed over all forensic and digital data to Monaco’s investigators as it continues to untangle the wider network of actors who ordered and funded the initial hit in the principality.
