Montreal’s Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix weekend could feature an unusual off-track storyline this year, with workers in the city’s adult entertainment industry threatening strike action during one of their busiest periods of the calendar.

The protest is being led by the Sex Work Autonomous Committee (SWAC), which is campaigning for greater labour protections and employee recognition for dancers working in Montreal strip clubs. Currently, many dancers are classified as independent contractors rather than employees, a distinction the group argues leaves them without several workplace protections and benefits.

The same trend has been prevalent in many countries around the world, including India, where more and more industries are shifting to contractual employment, which usually doesn’t fall under the labor laws.

In a statement cited by Reuters, SWAC said dancers remain accountable to club management despite technically operating as independent contractors. The organisation argues that the current structure creates an imbalance between workplace obligations and labour rights.

The timing of the proposed strike is significant. Formula 1 weekends have historically delivered a major economic boost to Montreal, with hotels, bars, restaurants, and entertainment venues experiencing a sharp rise in business as fans and tourists pour into the city. For many nightlife establishments, the Canadian Grand Prix weekend is considered among the most profitable stretches of the year.

By planning industrial action during the event, organisers hope to maximise visibility for their demands while international attention is focused on Montreal.

The Canadian Grand Prix is part of a packed motorsport weekend globally, with the Indianapolis 500 and NASCAR’s Coca-Cola 600 also taking place across North America. The concentration of major racing events is expected to draw heightened sporting attention and large travelling crowds, further amplifying the visibility of any demonstrations in the city.

Large sporting events have often served as a platform for labour-related protests and public campaigns, with organisers leveraging the scale of media coverage surrounding such occasions to draw attention to workplace disputes.
