The ‘Special One’ rarely stays out of the spotlight for long. And now, Jose Mourinho could be circling back to familiar territory.

According to reports in Portuguese media, the current Benfica boss is being lined up for a potential return to Real Madrid, with the Spanish giants exploring options ahead of a crucial summer reset.

Speculation intensified after Mourinho was asked directly whether he would remain at Benfica for the 2026–27 season.

True to form, he left the door wide open.

“I cannot say, how can I say such a thing? It doesn’t just depend on me! It’s obvious."

Reports from Portuguese outlet Record suggest Real Madrid president Florentino Perez is considering a proven figure to steady the ship, with Mourinho’s name firmly in the mix.

The context? Mounting pressure at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Madrid are staring at the possibility of back-to-back trophyless seasons, a rarity for them, with underwhelming campaigns across La Liga, the Copa del Rey, and the UEFA Champions League so far.

That has put current manager Alvaro Arbeloa under intense scrutiny, with his future far from secure.

A Familiar Face, A Proven Track Record

For many Madrid fans, a Mourinho return wouldn’t be a gamble but rather a reset.

During his first stint from 2010 to 2013, he delivered a historic 100-point La Liga title and a Copa del Rey, while restoring edge and intensity to a squad competing at the highest level.

His ability to manage big personalities and high-pressure environments remains one of his strongest assets — something that Madrid certainly can utilise currently.

Contract Complications Or Opportunity?

Mourinho’s current Benfica deal reportedly includes a break clause, negotiated during the club’s 2025 presidential cycle — a detail that has only fueled speculation.

However, the man himself has previously downplayed any Madrid links:

“The only thing that exists is that I have another year on my contract with Benfica… there is nothing with Real Madrid."

For now, it’s a waiting game.
