Fenerbahçe’s new signing Jhon Durán has sparked immediate controversy in Istanbul after failing to report for the club’s first training session, just days after securing a high-profile loan move from Al Nassr.
Durán, 21, joined the Turkish giants on a one-year loan deal, having transferred to the Saudi Pro League club just six months ago for €85 million ($88 million) from Aston Villa.
Despite a strong showing in Saudi Arabia—12 goals in 18 appearances—his career continues to raise eyebrows, this time for all the wrong reasons.
Mourinho Furious Over No-Show
Durán’s absence from training clearly angered new head coach José Mourinho, who didn’t hold back when addressing the media.
“It’s a lack of respect. There are clear rules, and those who don’t follow them will face the consequences. We will talk to him… if he shows up," Mourinho told Marca.
The Portuguese manager made it clear that professionalism will be non-negotiable under his watch, and Durán’s early misstep has already strained the relationship.
A Troubled Pattern Emerges
Durán’s career has been marked by rapid movement and unfulfilled expectations. Fenerbahçe is his fourth club in just over two years—and his third in 10 months. Less than a year ago, the Colombian striker signed a five-and-a-half-year contract with Aston Villa, which now feels like a distant memory.
While his natural ability is undeniable, his lack of stability and recent behavior continue to cloud his reputation. Mourinho’s stern response only reinforces the urgency for Durán to reset his approach before burning yet another bridge.
Durán’s latest loan follows a short but impressive stint at Al Nassr, where he helped the team to a third-place finish in the Saudi Pro League and a semifinal run in the AFC Champions League Elite. Still, his time in Saudi Arabia, like that of Jordan Henderson and others, ended sooner than expected.
Once regarded by Aston Villa as a potential world-class striker, Durán now finds himself at a crossroads.
The Colombian international was one of Europe’s brightest young forwards during the first half of the 2024–25 season, netting 12 goals across all competitions for Villa.
Yet the off-field issues and constant movement are overshadowing his potential.
Fenerbahçe, and Mourinho in particular, will expect answers—and accountability—sooner rather than later.
