A 27-year-old tribal woman in Madhya Pradesh’s Khandwa district was allegedly gang-raped by six men, including a minor. her complaint was denied justice by the village’s panchayat, where members instead described the accused as “sanskari".
The incident took place around 1 am on November 29, when the woman and her husband were working as irrigation labourers and resting in a shed on a village farm. According to the survivor, five young men and a boy arrived there. When her husband stepped away to light a bonfire, the group allegedly overpowered her and raped her.
She said the accused threatened to kill her husband if the couple spoke out, leaving her fearful and silent for days. Seeking help, she approached the local panchayat — only to face dismissal and humiliation. The woman alleged that several panchayat members were related to the accused and refused to believe her. “They kept saying their boys are ‘sanskari’," she said, adding that even some women defended the accused, and no one supported her.
Feeling abandoned, the survivor went to the police on December 8.
Khandwa Superintendent of Police Manoj Rai said all six accused have been arrested. “One of the accused is a minor and has been sent to a juvenile home. The remaining accused will be produced in court and sent to jail," he said.
