A retaining wall located beside a residential building in Mumbai’s Vikhroli area collapsed on Wednesday morning following heavy overnight rainfall. The wall stood adjacent to the Sunheights residential building and along a nearby road.

Visuals from the site showed a section of the structure collapsing after hours of intense rain. There were no immediate reports of injuries.

The collapse came as Mumbai woke up to persistent showers and cloudy skies after a night of heavy rainfall triggered by the advancing southwest monsoon. Residents across several parts of the city reported waterlogged streets and reduced visibility during the early morning hours.

Mumbai Rains: IMD Issues Orange Alert

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for Mumbai and neighbouring Palghar district at 4 am, warning of thunderstorms, lightning, intense to very intense rainfall and gusty winds reaching speeds of 40-60 kmph. The alert remained in effect for three hours before being downgraded to an orange alert at 7 am.

According to the weather department, moderate to intense spells of rain are expected to continue across Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, Palghar and Sindhudurg districts.

Despite the heavy rainfall, the city’s transport network remained largely unaffected. Officials said all major subways were operational, while suburban train services continued to run on schedule. BEST bus services also functioned normally, providing relief to commuters heading to work on Wednesday morning.

The overnight showers followed the arrival of the southwest monsoon in Mumbai on Tuesday, nearly two weeks later than its usual onset date of June 10. The rains brought much-needed respite from the humid conditions that had persisted across the city over the past several weeks.
