Mumbai's Mrinal Tai Gore Flyover extension to open on June 6

MUMBAI: The long-awaited extension of the Mrinal Tai Gore Flyover is set to be inaugurated on the morning of Saturday, June 6. The project is aimed at easing traffic congestion in Goregaon.The 750-meter flyover will provide a direct link between Ram Mandir and Goregaon areas in western suburbs and will have four lanes.While the main span of the Mrinal Tai Gore Railway Flyover was opened to traffic in 2016, work continued on the two approach arms of the bridge, each approximately 390 metres long. The project also included the development of pedestrian amenities, painting works, safety infrastructure and installation of noise barriers.The completed flyover is expected to significantly improve traffic flow in Goregaon and provide relief to commuters by reducing congestion along the corridor.The project, initially estimated at Rs 209 crore, ultimately cost around ₹248 crore upon completion.The extension project received administrative approval in 2018, with construction commencing on March 22, 2019. The contract was awarded to the MEPL-Gyan joint venture.

According to BMC records, the 750-metre-long flyover was originally scheduled to be completed within 24 months.However, the project faced multiple setbacks, including delays caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, which necessitated an extension of the timeline. In 2023, the BMC approved a revised proposal, increasing the project cost from ₹209 crore to ₹240 crore, including taxes. Subsequently, technical challenges encountered during construction required additional works and further revisions to the contract value, pushing the final project cost to Rs 248 crore.The civic standing committee few weeks ago had also visited the project site. Congress party leader Ashraf Azmi criticised the BMC for delays in the completion works of the bridge.Local residents said it’s better that the bridge is opened up as soon as possible as all works have already been completed.
