The district unit of the Karnataka State Muslim Organisations’ Federation will be organising a “Karnataka Muslim Convention” in the city on Sunday to discuss the implementation of assurances made to the Muslim community by the Congress-led State government and present a report outlining key demands.

Addressing a press conference here, the federation member Ibrahim Patel Yalwar said the convention, titled “Karnataka Muslim Convention: What Did the Congress Government Promise, What Has It Delivered, and What Next?”, is expected to draw participation from various Muslim organisations, institutions and members of the community from across the district.

A report prepared by the different committees and experts from the Karnataka State Muslim Federation will be presented at the event. The report examines the implementation of major commitments made to the Muslim community during the Congress government’s three-year tenure, assessing fulfilled and unfulfilled promises, reviewing the status of political representation, and outlining key demands placed before the government.

Mr. Yalwar said that after a similar programme was held in Bengaluru, more conventions are planned in Mysuru, Davangere, Mangaluru and other districts in the coming days.

Speaking on the occasion, the federation member, Afzal Mehmood, alleged that several assurances made by the Congress government remained unfulfilled. While the government had withdrawn restrictions on the wearing of the hijab, other issues, such as the restoration of Muslim reservations, action against hate speech, enhanced budgetary allocations, political representation, Waqf-related matters, the anti-cow slaughter law, the anti-conversion law, and scholarships for students, were yet to be addressed, he said.

Mr. Mehmood also expressed disappointment over the absence of Muslim representation in the Legislative Council elections despite demands for at least two seats for members of the community. He urged the government to provide at least one Rajya Sabha seat and four berths in the State Cabinet to representatives of the community.

He clarified that no political leaders had been invited to the convention. “This is neither a political platform nor a forum for confrontation. It is a democratic initiative aimed at urging the government to fulfil the assurances made to the community within the framework of the Constitution,” Mr. Mehmood said.
