The Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) has reached a near-complete consensus on seat sharing for the upcoming Maharashtra Legislative Council elections, finalising candidates for 15 of the 17 seats going to polls. The decision on the remaining two seats is expected shortly, Maharashtra Congress chief Harshvardhan Sapkal said after a crucial meeting of alliance leaders in Mumbai on Friday.
The high-level meeting was held at the Yashwantrao Chavan Centre and attended by senior leaders from all three alliance partners, signalling that the opposition bloc is keen to project unity ahead of the politically significant contest.
As per the agreed formula, the Congress will contest seven seats — Chandrapur, Yavatmal, Bhandara, Amravati, Ahilyanagar, Solapur and Dharashiv-Latur-Beed. Sharad Pawar-led NCP (SP) will field candidates from Pune, Thane and Sangli-Satara, while Shiv Sena (UBT) will contest four seats — Raigad, Jalgaon, Parbhani-Hingoli and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar.
Speaking after the meeting, Sapkal accused the ruling BJP-led Mahayuti of attempting to influence the electoral process through money power. He alleged that efforts were being made to poach opposition corporators and claimed that advance payments were being offered to engineer defections.
“The ruling alliance has turned a democratic election into a marketplace. There is an open attempt to misuse money and muscle power. Even among their own allies, there is intense competition and political poaching," Sapkal said.
He said the MVA would collectively fight what he termed the “high-handedness" of the ruling alliance and present a united challenge in the Council elections.
The Congress has also appointed senior leaders as election observers across constituencies to tighten organisational coordination and monitor the electoral process closely.
Among those assigned responsibilities are MP Praniti Shinde for Solapur, former minister Vishwajeet Kadam for Sangli-Satara, senior leader Balasaheb Thorat for Ahilyanagar, Nana Patole for Bhandara-Gondia, Vijay Wadettiwar for Wardha-Chandrapur-Gadchiroli and Amit Deshmukh for Dharashiv-Latur-Beed.
The near-final seat-sharing agreement is being seen as an important test of opposition cohesion after months of speculation over internal differences. With the final two seats yet to be resolved, alliance leaders are expected to hold another round of discussions soon to seal the complete formula.
