Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday said his wife has filed a police complaint against Congress leader Pawan Khera over what he described as “false allegations" regarding multiple passports and foreign assets, escalating the political confrontation ahead of the April 9 assembly polls.
The Chief Minister also alleged that material used in recent Congress press conferences was sourced from Pakistani social media groups, claiming attempts were being made to influence the Assam elections.
“Yesterday, Pawan Khera and Gaurav Gogoi did two press conferences, one in Delhi, one in Guwahati. During our research, we found that the entire material of the press conference, which took place yesterday, was supplied by a Pakistani social media group," Himanta alleged.
“In the last 10 days, Pakistan channel has done at least 11 talk shows regarding the election in Assam, which never happened earlier. And in every talk show, the conclusion is that Congress should win," he added.
“Pakistan’s link to yesterday’s press conference has also now become very, very apparent. I am sure that this will be taken into consideration by the law enforcement agency," Sarma said.
WIFE FILES FIR OVER ‘FALSE ALLEGATIONS’
Sarma said legal action has already been initiated over what he termed fabricated claims about his wife, Riniki Bhuyan Sarma.
“Normally, when you raise a certain issue before the public with fraudulent documents, it attracts 420 and 468 of the IPC. Of course, there is a correspondence provision in the new BNS. When you use these allegations with fabricated documents to influence a result or outcome of an election, then it attracts higher penalty provisions, and the punishment for that is life imprisonment."
“Yesterday, my wife filed an FIR, and I am sure that the police will register the case in the appropriate section of law and take necessary action," the Chief Minister said.
Sarma also reiterated that the passport cited in the allegations relating to Dubai has been verified as “fake" by authorities.
“The Assam Police have already initiated an inquiry. Confirmation has been received from a Dubai government website that the Dubai passport mentioned is fake," he said.
“The Indian government has already reconfirmed that the Dubai passport is fake. Reports on the other two passports will be received from those governments by Monday or Tuesday," Sarma said.
WHAT CONGRESS ALLEGED
The controversy stems from claims made by Khera, chairman of the All India Congress Committee’s media and publicity department, who alleged that documents indicated Sarma’s wife held multiple passports, raising questions about possible violations of Indian law relating to dual citizenship.
Khera questioned how multiple passports could be held simultaneously and raised concerns about dual citizenship provisions.
“Himanta Biswa Sarma’s entire politics is based on hatred against Muslims, but how does his wife hold passports from two Muslim countries? According to Indian law, you cannot hold dual citizenship, so does Rinki Bhuyan Sarma also hold an Indian passport?"
“Is Himanta Biswa Sarma the adopted son of Amit Shah? And did the country’s Home Minister know that his adopted son’s wife holds three passports?" Khera said.
According to news agency PTI, Khera and Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi also asked the Chief Minister to clarify whether his family owned property in Dubai or had links to companies in Wyoming in the United States, and demanded that he submit an affidavit to the Election Commission of India disclosing the alleged assets.
The Congress leaders also called for a Special Investigation Team probe into allegations of multiple passports, undisclosed foreign assets and financial links to overseas entities.
GOGOI TAKES SWIPE AMID ROW
Gogoi also took a dig at the Chief Minister amid the controversy, referring to the UAE’s long-term residency programme.
In a post on X, Gogoi wrote, “Reading about the Golden visa in Dubai. It is a long-term residence visa which enables investors to live in the United Arab Emirates."

The Congress leader also demanded an investigation into the Chief Minister’s alleged foreign properties and financial interests.
HIMANTA SARMA ALLEGES DOCUMENT “DISCREPANCIES"
Rejecting the allegations, Sarma said there were multiple inconsistencies in the documents circulated by the Congress, suggesting possible digital manipulation.
“In one passport, Riniki’s photo is used, but it’s not actually hers. Can ‘India’ be a place of birth? It should be Jorhat, Assam, or Guwahati, Assam. ‘India’ is never written as a place of birth. It’s error upon error. I don’t know who advised Gaurav Gogoi on this," he said.
He also dismissed claims regarding companies allegedly linked to his son, saying the figures cited by Khera were unrealistic.
“Today, Pawan Khera held a press conference claiming my wife has three passports from three different countries. He also mentioned several companies in my son’s name, claiming they are worth Rs 52,000 crore. The entire budget of Assam isn’t even Rs 52,000 crore. Even if a chief minister earns for 20 years, it couldn’t be Rs 52,000 crore. That’s basic common sense," Sarma said.
The political exchange comes just days before Assam goes to polls on April 9, with both sides intensifying attacks and counter-attacks over allegations related to foreign assets, citizenship status and disclosure norms.
