The Aurangabad Municipal Corporation has turned up the heat on AIMIM corporator Matin Patel who allegedly harboured Nida Khan, an accused in the Nashik TCS sexual harassment and religious coercion case.
According to an Indian Express report, Aurangabad Mayor Sameer Rajurkar has sent a show-cause notice to Patel, asking him to prove that some of his properties, including the one where Khan reportedly stayed, are legally built. The properties concerned face the threat of demolition if Patel is unable to provide a satisfactory response to the notice.
According to the report, under the provisions of the Maharashtra Municipal Corporations Act, the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) leader could also lose his corporator post if proved that the properties were constructed illegally.
Among the properties in question are Patel’s house in Kausar Baug where Nida Khan allegedly stayed as well as an office premises nearby. “Prima facie, we are sure that both these properties have been constructed illegally, either partially or fully," the Express report quoted mayor Rajurkar as saying.
The AIMIM corporator’s deadline to respond to the May 9 notice ends on Tuesday, but he has sought 15 days from a local court to respond.
Earlier this month, Maharashtra Minister Sanjay Shirsat had alleged that Matin Patel, a 35-year-old first-time AIMIM corporator, was “pressured" by AIMIM leader Imtiaz Jaleel to harbour Nida Khan in one of his properties.
Shirsat, a Shiv Sena leader who is also the guardian minister of Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (Aurangabad), said he had written to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, demanding that those who had provided shelter to Khan and her family members should also come under the SIT scanner.
Weeks after she went into hiding, Khan, an accused in a case related to alleged religious conversion and sexual harassment of some women colleagues at a TCS unit in Nashik, was apprehended from a house in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar.
“Nida Khan first went to Mumbra, and later, Imtiaz Jaleel met her in Nashik, following which he made a statement supporting her. She came to Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and stayed here for over a month, and the house she stayed in belongs to an AIMIM corporator," Shirsat had alleged.
A Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Nashik police is probing nine cases of molestation and harassment at the IT major’s Nashik unit.
It had arrested eight persons, including a female operations manager, by registering nine FIRs after allegations of exploitation, attempt of forceful conversion, hurting religious sentiments, molestation and mental harassment of female employees at the TCS unit came to light.
Khan is accused of targeting employees in a WhatsApp group, pressuring them to pray and eat non-vegetarian food. According to the FIR, she also allegedly advised women employees to dress and behave in accordance with Islamic traditions.
