Real life love stories are far from all the beauties that we watch in Bollywood romantic entertainers and there are several celeb couples who have stood together even in tougher situations. One such story is 'The Family Man' actor Sharib Hashmi and wife Nasreen Hashmi.
How it all happened
When doctors first diagnosed Nasreen Hashmi with oral cancer in 2018, the Hashmi family’s world changed in an instant. The warning signs appeared subtly such as small sores that progressed into white or red patches. Many dismiss these early symptoms, but for Nasreen they signaled the start of a long and recurring battle.
In an old interview with Siddharth Kannan, Sharib Hashmi, called the diagnosis “very tough,” recalling how their routine turned chaotic overnight as they balanced medical tests, hospital visits, finances, and caring for their children. Doctors typically identify oral cancer through physical exams, imaging, and biopsies, followed by treatment plans that begin with surgical tumor removal. For Nasreen this was only the beginning.
The weight of repeated surgeries
Nasreen’s fight grew even more difficult when the disease returned multiple times and this forced her to undergo four major surgeries. Each procedure was physically draining.
Despite the brutality of the operations Sharib shared that she displayed a remarkable ability to recover quickly. He said he has “never seen in anyone” the level of resilience she showed, often bouncing back within three to five days. Surgical treatment for oral cancer brings its own challenges. But Nasreen remained determined through each round and refused to let the disease take away her spirit.
Supporting Sharib Hashmi through his career struggles
While coping with her illness Nasreen continued to support Sharib during the most difficult phase of his acting career. Long before he became widely loved for playing JK alongside Manoj Bajpayee in the hit web-series 'The Family Man' Sharib faced uncertainty and financial stress. Despite her own pain she pushed him to keep going. Her encouragement kept him grounded during moments when he considered stepping away from acting. Sharib has often spoken about how she stood by him not just as a partner but as a pillar of strength.
Unlike his character JK who is portrayed as the forever-single and funny right hand of the protagonist in the show Sharib’s real life reflects deep partnership. He and Nasreen have been married for many years and they share a bond that has grown stronger through hardship. Her battle with oral cancer tested them emotionally and financially but the couple chose to confront each setback head-on.
