Taking suo motu cognisance of the rape and murder of a minor girl in Baruipur in South 24 Parganas, West Bengal, the National Commission for Women (NCW) on Monday (July 6, 2026) sought a detailed Action Taken Report (ATR) from the Bengal DGP Siddh Nath Gupta within a week.
The ATR would have to cover not just the brutal crime, but also the subsequent incidents of mob violence where a man was lynched for his alleged involvement in the crime, central forces jawans were assaulted, and police vehicles were torched, the Commission said in a statement.

"The Commission has sought details regarding the registration of the FIR under the appropriate provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the POCSO Act, the immediate arrest of all persons involved in the alleged rape and murder, and the progress of the investigation," the statement said.
"The Commission has further sought details of the investigation into the subsequent mob lynching, action taken against all those involved, an inquiry into any lapses in policing and preventive measures, the conduct of a comprehensive forensic and post-mortem examination, and the medical, psychological, legal and compensation support extended to the victim's family," the statement added.
Stating that the NCW follows "a Zero Tolerance policy towards crimes against women and girls", the statutory body called for a swift, impartial, and comprehensive investigation, with stringent action against all those responsible in accordance with the law.

A six-member Special Investigation Team along with the Baruipur district police have arrested three of the four suspects named in the FIR, including the prime accused in the case, Ananda Sardar, following overnight search operations and interrogation of three others who were detained.
Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari said in Kolkata that his government will ensure the girl's family gets justice and the perpetrators of the brutal crime are hanged. He added that those found involved in the subsequent mob unrest and lynching will also face the full force of law.
