The cancellation of National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET UG) 2026 following paper leak allegations has triggered confusion and anxiety among lakhs of medical aspirants across India.
Students are now asking practical questions: Will they have to pay fees again? Will the exam pattern change? Will old admit cards remain valid? Here is what the National Testing Agency (NTA) has said.
Why Was The Paper Cancelled?
NTA has officially cancelled the NEET UG 2026 exam held on May 3 this year due to widespread allegations of a paper leak and compromised exam integrity. Investigations, particularly by the Rajasthan Special Operations Group (SOG), found evidence of a “guess paper" that closely matched the actual exam paper, which was circulated before the exam.

Reports indicated that nearly 120 questions, including 90 in Biology and 30 in Chemistry, matched the actual paper, leading authorities to conclude the process was compromised. Following inputs from law enforcement, the NTA confirmed the exam would be cancelled. The Union government has ordered a comprehensive investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
Will Students Have To Pay NEET Exam Fees Again?
No. In a message posted on ‘X’, NTA said no extra exam fee will be charged.
Will The Fee Paid By Students Be Refunded?
Yes, the NTA clarified that the fees already paid by students will be refunded.
Will Students Need To Fill Forms Again?
The NTA has clarified that registration details, candidature, and chosen exam centres from May 2026 will remain valid for the re-exam. No new registration will be needed.
Will Syllabus Be Changed For The Re-Exam?
The syllabus for the re-examination will remain exactly the same as the originally notified NEET UG 2026 syllabus. Since the cancelled exam was part of the same admission cycle, authorities usually do not alter the academic scope midway.
Will The Exam Pattern Change?
That’s unlikely. The re-exam is expected to follow the same broad structure ie same subjects, same marking scheme, same duration, and same number of questions. However, NTA could introduce procedural or security changes such as stricter frisking, earlier reporting time, enhanced biometric verification, different paper distribution protocols, and tighter centre surveillance.
What About Admit Cards?
NTA said new cards will be issued for the re-exam, with the old ones now being considered invalid.
When Is The Re-Exam?
NTA has said it will notify the fresh date of the exam soon.
Will NEET Counselling Be Delayed?
Almost certainly. A nationwide re-examination means revised answer keys, fresh result processing, updated merit lists, and delayed counselling schedules.
This could push back MBBS admissions, BDS admissions, AYUSH admissions, state counselling rounds, and private college admissions. The final academic calendar may now depend entirely on how quickly the re-exam is conducted and evaluated.
