The Narendra Modi government has begun work on the ‘Yuge Yugeen Bharat Museum’ that will come up in the North and South Block on Raisina Hill and is seeking a specialist consultant for the content to be showcased in the museum.

A document reviewed by CNN-News18 reveals new details about this mega project to come up in North and South Block, which have housed the PMO and ministries of Home, Defence and Finance for decades.

The Yuge Yugeen Bharat Museum will be spread over 1.55 lakh square meters and will be a “cultural landmark" that could come up in the next three years, as per the said document.

“It will be a national institution that will narrate the civilisational journey of Bharat and its diverse histories, philosophies, material cultures, and intellectual traditions," the document says.

The project includes 30 galleries that will come up indoors, outdoors and in the courtyards. “The galleries will be designed to present interconnected themes that span across time periods and regions, highlighting India’s plurality and continuity through carefully curated collections, narratives, and immersive experiences," it says.

The museum will highlight India’s pivotal position in global networks such as the Silk Road, Spice Route, and Indian Ocean circuits and will emerge as a “space of public engagement, cultural interpretation, and knowledge dissemination".

The museum will emerge through the adaptive reuse of these historic buildings, the North and South blocks, as per the document with CNN-News18.

The consultant to be brought on board by the government must have demonstrated expertise in large-scale museum content development and collection analysis as he or she will be responsible for conceptualising, researching, and preparing interpretive content and narratives for the galleries, in alignment with the overarching vision of the museum, the document says.

Each of the 30 galleries will be conceptually distinct, yet seamlessly integrated into a unified, thematically coherent visitor experience. “This narrative approach must be grounded in scholarly research, object-based analysis, and audience-focused storytelling," the document says.

Collections for the museum will be drawn from across the country, along with artefacts to ensure that the content contributes meaningfully to the museum’s purpose as a space of public education, cultural representation, and human reflection, the document adds.

The museum will celebrate India’s historical role as a global entrepôt, fostering trade, cultural exchange, and intellectual dialogue. The content should be appealing to school groups, families, scholars, tourists, and international visitors, the document says.

“The narrative must reflect the richness and diversity of Indian cultural expressions across geographies, periods, languages, communities, and knowledge systems, creating a coherent and inclusive museological experience," the document says.
