A newly married couple died by suicide within days of each other in Madhya Pradesh’s Gwalior district, leaving both families in shock and prompting a police investigation into the circumstances surrounding the deaths.

Police said 23-year-old Jyoti Tomar, also known as Megha, allegedly died by suicide at her parental home in the Murar area on May 20. She had married Siddharth Kandil, 26, on April 25 in an arranged marriage.

According to police, Jyoti went to her maternal home in Murar on May 1 after the wedding. On May 20, she allegedly hanged herself using a dupatta at her parents’ house.

Disturbed by his wife’s death, Siddharth allegedly died by suicide two days later on May 22. Police said he hanged himself in the bathroom of his house in the Pinto Park area.

Area City Superintendent of Police (CSP) Atul Soni said Siddharth had earlier spoken to police and appeared deeply disturbed after learning about Jyoti’s death.

“Both families are unable to explain the reasons behind the suicides,” the officer said.

Police said neither side of the family has levelled any allegations against the other so far. Authorities have registered cases and started an investigation into both deaths.

Investigators are examining technical evidence, including mobile phones, social media accounts and other digital records linked to the couple, to determine the reasons behind the suicides.
