Vijayawada: The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) will formally commence the land acquisition process for Amaravati Outer Ring Road (ORR) project from the first week of June, marking a major step forward for one of Andhra Pradesh’s most ambitious infrastructure initiatives. The NHAI has already issued draft notifications for acquisition of land across five districts — Guntur, Palnadu, Bapatla, Krishna, and NTR — for the mega project linked to capital city Amaravati. NHAI has proposed for acquisition of nearly 7,400 acres of land for the ORR project, which is expected to transform regional connectivity and significantly decongest urban traffic movement around Amaravati and Guntur regions.

The proposed ORR is estimated to cost around Rs 30,000 crore and is being viewed as a critical infrastructure corridor for the future expansion of capital region.According to preliminary plans, the ORR corridor will pass through nearly 97 villages spread across multiple mandals in the five districts. The proposed alignment covers 189.4 kilometres and has been designed to facilitate seamless connectivity between major national and state highways.

Municipal administration minister P Narayana said the road corridor would help divert heavy vehicular traffic away from densely populated urban areas, particularly Vijayawada and Guntur cities and surrounding towns. Vehicles travelling towards Hyderabad, Chennai, Visakhapatnam, and other major destinations are expected to benefit from the bypass connectivity once the ORR becomes operational.Sources in the revenue and highways departments said survey teams have already completed substantial groundwork and identified land parcels besides mapping the affected villages.

The NHAI is now preparing to initiate formal acquisition procedures, including notifications to landowners and compensation assessments.Authorities indicated that compensation would be determined as per prevailing land acquisition norms, though the rapidly increasing land prices around Amaravati are likely to push acquisition costs significantly higher. In several stretches, land values are estimated to be around Rs 30 lakh per acre or more. The ORR is proposed as a six-lane access-controlled highway in the initial phase with scope for future expansion depending on traffic growth. The project is also expected to include interchanges, flyovers, service roads, and connectivity corridors to nearby towns and industrial clusters. The state govt is of the view that the ORR will play a crucial role in boosting economic activity around Amaravati by attracting industries, logistics hubs, real estate investments, and commercial development along the corridor.

The project is also expected to improve connectivity to the capital city from coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema regions.Meanwhile, some farmers and residents in villages falling under the proposed alignment have begun expressing concerns over land acquisition and rehabilitation issues. However, the NHAI assured that compensation and rehabilitation measures would be implemented in accordance with the law.
