The Detroit Red Wings have remained patient despite growing speculation around captain Dylan Larkin's future. Since Larkin requested a trade, general manager Steve Yzerman has resisted moving quickly, making it clear that Detroit would only consider a deal capable of changing the direction of the franchise.
While several NHL teams have reshaped their rosters this offseason, the Red Wings have held firm. Now, a fresh development suggests Larkin is trying to create more realistic paths toward a trade by widening the list of teams he is willing to join, giving Detroit another potential negotiating partner.
Why did Dylan Larkin expand his preferred trade destinations?
Trade lists have become an important part of this summer's NHL market, and Larkin appears to be following that trend.
His original list reportedly included the Minnesota Wild, Vegas Golden Knights and Florida Panthers. While those clubs generated immediate interest, not every destination offered a realistic path to completing a deal.Florida has little room to make another blockbuster move, making a reunion with the defending champions difficult to picture. Vegas always finds creative ways to manage its salary cap, but the type of assets Detroit would likely demand may be too valuable for the Golden Knights to part with.
That left Minnesota as the strongest candidate, especially given the long-standing belief around the league that the Wild would be an ideal fit for the Team USA center.
According to Detroit beat reporter Ansar Khan, Larkin has now added the Dallas Stars to his preferred trade destinations. The timing is notable. Dallas recently explored a major move for Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman Zach Werenski but failed to complete a deal.
The reported package was centered around 24-year-old defenseman Thomas Harley, though it remains uncertain whether the Stars would consider offering a similar return for Larkin. From Detroit's perspective, Larkin remains one of the league's more valuable centers. The 29-year-old has five seasons remaining on his eight-year, $69.6 million contract, which carries an annual cap hit of $8.7 million. That combination of age, leadership and contract stability means Yzerman has little reason to settle for anything less than a premium return.Larkin's desire to leave also appears easy to understand. He has completed 11 seasons with Detroit, but the franchise has now gone a decade without reaching the Stanley Cup Playoffs. For a player entering the prime years of his career, the opportunity to compete for a championship has become increasingly important.Dallas, however, brings another layer of uncertainty. Jason Robertson's contract situation remains unresolved, with arbitration looming and his long-term future still unclear.
League speculation has also linked the Pittsburgh Penguins to Robertson as they continue exploring ways to strengthen their roster around Sidney Crosby. If Robertson eventually leaves Dallas, the Stars could look very different from the contender Larkin is reportedly interested in joining. On the other hand, if Robertson becomes part of a trade with Detroit, the Red Wings would almost certainly want confidence that he would commit to a long-term extension before finalizing any blockbuster move. For now, expanding the trade list gives both Larkin and Detroit greater flexibility. Whether that ultimately leads to Dallas or another contender remains one of the biggest questions still hanging over the NHL offseason.
