In a sharply worded observation, a judge of the Allahabad High Court accused the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of overlooking serious cases of violence against Muslims while engaging in matters “that prima facie do not concern” its mandate.
The court was hearing a petition filed by the Teachers Association Madaris Arabia, challenging a February 2025 NHRC directive to the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) to investigate allegations against 558 aided madrasas in Uttar Pradesh. The complaint before the Commission alleged financial irregularities, including the misuse of government grants and the appointment of unqualified teachers through corrupt practices.
