The National Institute of Oceanography (NIO)-Goa and Water Resources Department of Andhra Pradesh will collectively carry out a scientific study on the threats to flood embankments of river Godavari in Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Konaseema district to strengthen the embankments, preventing any untoward incidents and breach to river during the Godavari floods.

A team from the NIO-Goa, on Friday, held talks with District Collector R. Mahesh Kumar and other officials about the challenges in maintaining the embankments, and existing preparedness measures to prevent the flooding breach.

Mr. Kumar stated in a release that the scientists and irrigation engineers would together carry out the scientific survey of the entire embankments and submit a report, with a proposal for strengthening the embankments in the district.

The total length of embankments of river Godavari on the both sides is above 527 kms in the Godavari region, beginning from downstream Polavaram irrigation project. “Fund will be sought from the National Disaster Management Authority to execute the proposals for strengthening the embankments,” Mr. Kumar said.
