Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday hailed what he called a historic election in West Bengal, saying no innocent lives were lost for the first time in the state with a reputation of poll violence.

“Recall the kind of news that used to emerge during past elections – violence, fear, and the deaths of innocent people. However, this time, the entire country witnessed a new development: peaceful voting in West Bengal. No innocent lives were lost this time," he said during his victory speech from the BJP headquarters in Delhi.

His remarks came after the BJP stormed to a historic victory in West Bengal, ending the Trinamool Congress’ (TMC) 15-year reign. The BJP has won and is leading in 207 seats, pushing the TMC back to 80 seats.

PM Modi described the Bengal verdict as a triumph of democracy over fear, and urged all political parties to end the cycle of political violence, noting the suffering it has caused in the past.

“Let there be a change of political habit. After the BJP’s win, lets not talk about ‘badla’ (revenge) and talk about ‘badlav’ (change). Let’s break the cycle of violence," he added.

PM Modi credited the victory to the people of Bengal for their resilience. He added that the first Cabinet will approve Ayushman Bharat and strong action will be taken against illegal immigrants.

The Prime Minister also invoked the founder of the Hindutva movement, Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee. “I think how much peace Dr Mukherjee’s soul must have found today. In 1951, by founding the Jan Sangh, he gave every worker the message that one must live for the country and die for the country. He fought a great battle to keep West Bengal as part of India," he said.

“Today, on May 4, 2026, the people of Bengal have given us, the BJP workers, that opportunity. A new chapter has been added to Bengal’s destiny. From today, Bengal is free from fear. It is filled with the confidence of development."
