Driving out of Karnataka? Well, you now have one thing less to worry. A change in how vehicle data is managed is set to impact motorists from Karnataka. The move is aimed at fixing a long-pending issue linked to digital verification of documents, especially for those travelling outside the state.

Many vehicle owners faced trouble despite having valid Pollution Under Control Certificates (PUCC). The issue was not with the certificate. It was with the data visibility.

Details of Karnataka-registered vehicles were not available on the central government’s Vahan portal. This created problems when Karnataka vehicles entered other states.

Traffic police in Maharashtra, Goa, Kerala and Tamil Nadu depend on the portal to verify records. When Karnataka data did not show up, motorists were fined. In several cases, fines went up to Rs 10,000, even when valid PUCC certificates were available.

What Has Changed?

To fix this gap, the Karnataka government has linked PUCC data directly with the Vahan portal starting April 1, 2026. This will ensure that pollution certificate details are accessible across the country. It will also improve transparency in the system and reduce confusion during checks.

Older PUCC records will be uploaded in phases. New certificates, however, will be updated automatically on the portal. For vehicle owners, this change brings clear relief. There will be less need to carry or show physical documents when travelling to other states.

The chances of being fined due to missing data are expected to reduce significantly. Verification will become faster, as all records will be available on a single platform. This also means fewer disputes with enforcement officials during routine checks.

Digital Access Made Easier

PUCC details will now also be available on apps like mParivahan and DigiLocker. Motorists can access their documents digitally at any time. This reduces dependency on physical copies and adds convenience during travel.

The issue had been flagged repeatedly in recent months. Reports showed that Karnataka vehicle owners were being penalised despite following rules.

The lack of integration with the central system had become a major gap. Enforcement agencies rely heavily on digital records, and missing data led to unnecessary fines.

With the new system coming into effect from April 1, 2026, authorities expect this problem to be resolved. For many motorists, this is a simple but important change. It could mean smoother travel, fewer penalties, and one less hassle on the road.
