A university student drowned after falling into a water-filled pit at a vacant plot in Noida’s Sector 94, police said on Wednesday.

Three other students who were with him were rescued and are currently undergoing medical treatment, they added.

The four students, all enrolled at a university, had gone on a picnic outing after completing their examinations. During the outing, they entered an unfenced vacant plot where a deep pit filled with rainwater posed a serious hazard.

The lack of barricades or warning signs is believed to have contributed to the incident.

According to officials, the student who drowned was pulled out of the water in an unconscious state.

Teams from the police and the National Disaster Response Force rushed to the spot and initiated rescue operations. Despite efforts to revive him, the young man could not be saved.

The incident has once again raised questions about safety enforcement in Noida, particularly around abandoned or under-construction sites.

It comes months after the death of 27-year-old software engineer Yuvraj Mehta, who drowned on January 16, after his car plunged into an unmarked, 70-foot-deep water-filled construction pit near Sector 150 during dense fog.

Mehta remained trapped for over 90 minutes, desperately calling his father for help while standing on his car roof.

The case sparked widespread outrage over delayed rescue efforts and the absence of safety measures.

A passing delivery worker had attempted to help, but rescue teams reportedly lacked adequate equipment and were slow to enter the water due to harsh weather conditions.

Following Mehta’s death, police registered an FIR against the builder for negligence under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

The Noida Authority later terminated a junior engineer and issued show-cause notices to other officials. The authority had also announced plans to identify “death points" across the city and take corrective action.

Newly appointed Noida Authority CEO Krishna Karunesh had issued directives to compile a list of hazardous locations and ensure safety measures such as fencing and signage.
