Djokovic made history at Roland Garros with his record-breaking 82nd Grand Slam singles appearance before battling past Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard.

Another day, another record broken by Novak Djokovic (AP)
Novak Djokovic added another record to his already stacked resume on Sunday at the 2026 French Open.
When the 24-time Grand Slam champion stepped onto Court Philippe-Chatrier for his first-round clash against Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, he officially made his 82nd men’s singles appearance at a major — the most in tennis history.
Djokovic moved clear of Roger Federer and Feliciano Lopez, who previously shared the record with 81 appearances each.
Stan Wawrinka sits fourth on the all-time list and is set to make his 76th Grand Slam singles appearance in Paris this week.
Another Roland Garros Landmark
The Serbian’s latest appearance also marked his 22nd consecutive Roland Garros campaign, tying the tournament record held by Richard Gasquet.
Despite entering the clay-court Slam with questions surrounding both his form and fitness, Djokovic managed to steady himself after dropping the opening set against the big-serving Frenchman.
The 39-year-old eventually fought back for a 5-7, 7-5, 6-1, 6-4 victory in a match that lasted just under three hours.
“It was a good match to be part of, three hours, just what the doctor ordered, at age 39. Here we go," Djokovic said afterwards.
Still Chasing Major No. 25
Djokovic has played only four tour-level events this season and has been managing physical concerns through much of the year. His best result so far remains his run to the final at the Australian Open.
“The body is feeling all right for now," Djokovic said.
“Of course I have to get the game together, and hopefully that will happen as I progress."
The 101-time tour-level champion will next face another Frenchman, Valentin Royer, as he continues his bid for a record-extending 25th Grand Slam title.
