Udupi: Udupi district police have generated 2,700 traffic violation e-challans in about 45 days, using technology-driven enforcement, and have also significantly reduced violations. The district police commissioned automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras at six key locations in the district on May 21. Since the cameras became operational, speeding by two-wheelers, three-wheelers and light motor vehicles and several other violations have fallen drastically compared to the first week of its commissioning.Udupi SP Hariram Shankar said that 40%-70% reduction has been observed across all major categories of traffic violations since the implementation of the ANPR project.
In the first week from May 21, police had detected 40,175 cases of speeding violations by two-wheelers, three-wheelers and light motor vehicles. Meanwhile, the number of violations reduced to 14,364 (64%) between June 29 and July 6. The number of seatbelt violations reduced from 15,575 to 6,561 (58%) during the period.
