The Basavanagudi police are on the lookout for an elderly conwoman who lured a 42-year-old nurse with 10 brass coins and made away with her gold chain worth ₹3 lakh.
Though the incident occurred on June 24, the victim, Manjula B.N., approached the police only on June 28 after she went to the jewellers to check about the 10 “gold coins”, which she had bartered with her 39 grams gold chain.
According to the complaint, Manjula was on her way to Gandhi Bazaar for shopping, in DVG road, on June 24 when she was confronted a woman aged around 60. The woman asked her help stating that she had ten gold coins and came to sell them to buy jewels. She asked Ms. Manjula to check the weight of one of the gold coins at a shop.
The victim agreed to help and went to a near-by gold shop. The shop owners checked the gold coin and told her that it looked like gold but they can’t check the authenticity since they did not have the machine.
Manjula came and handed over the coin and told her the details. The woman dragged her to one of the bylanes and showed ten more coins, and offered to give it to her in exchange of her gold chain. She also told her not to discuss this with anyone and that Manjula had to decide about the offer on the spot.
Excited by the the offer, Manjula handed over her gold chain and took the gold coins and returned home happy. The cheating came to light two days later when she tried to sell these coins and found that she had bartered her gold chain in return for gold plated brass coins.
