Smoke engulfs Moscow skyline after refinery hit by drone.
Russia-Ukraine War: Thick black smoke blanketed parts of Moscow and residents reported black stains on cars, roads, and clothing after a Ukrainian drone attack triggered a massive fire at a key oil refinery, raising concerns about “black rain".
As per media reports, the strike, described as one of the largest Ukrainian drone attacks on the capital since the war began, targeted the Kapotnya oil refinery in southeast Moscow, a facility that supplies more than a third of the fuel used in the region.
As flames engulfed parts of the refinery and smoke spread across the city, residents in several districts reported finding black stains on cars, roads and clothing after light drizzle carried soot and oily particles from the fire.
Residents in areas including Balashikha, Lyubertsy and southeastern Moscow also reported seeing black residue on vehicles and clothes. Some described the fallout as a fine oily drizzle.
Videos shared on social media showed towering plumes of dark smoke rising above Moscow’s skyline, while emergency crews battled to contain the blaze.

While Moscow authorities denied reports of “oil rain", they advised residents in affected areas to keep windows closed. Families with children, elderly people and those with respiratory conditions were also urged to temporarily leave the area.
What Is Black Rain?
Black rain occurs when smoke, soot, ash and other pollutants released into the atmosphere mix with moisture and later fall back to the ground as precipitation.
Instead of clear raindrops, the rain contains tiny particles of carbon, hydrocarbons and other contaminants, often leaving dark stains on surfaces after it evaporates.
The attack marked the second strike on the Moscow Oil Refinery within a week and formed part of a broader Ukrainian campaign targeting Russia’s energy infrastructure.
The refinery is located about 15 kilometres from the Kremlin and is considered a strategic facility for fuel supplies in the Russian capital.
The attack disrupted operations at four Moscow airports and forced authorities to temporarily halt flights. Russian officials said air defences intercepted hundreds of incoming drones, but several targets were still hit.Ukraine has increasingly focused on Russian oil facilities in an effort to reduce Moscow’s war revenues and demonstrate that the consequences of the conflict can also be felt inside Russia.
Russia Responds
Meanwhile, Moscow responded with fresh attacks across Ukraine.
Ukrainian officials said Russian strikes killed two people in the northeastern Sumy region and injured several others. In Kharkiv, five people, including three children, reportedly required medical assistance after bombing raids.
