New Delhi: GPT-4o, GPT-4.1, GPT-4.1 mini will all be retired from ChatGPT, according to a recent announcement from OpenAI. This decision was made less than a year after OpenAI unveiled the GPT-4o in May 2024. Due to its friendly, organic conversational style, it has become popular among a subset of paid users. Although the company acknowledged that some users would be extremely disappointed by the change, it said it was imperative to concentrate resources on the models that the majority of people are currently using.
After GPT-5 was released last year, OpenAI temporarily restricted access to GPT-4o, which caused tension. That decision sparked backlash from the users who preferred GPT-4o’s tone and interaction style. OpenAI swiftly changed its direction and gave paid users access again. With this announcement, OpenAI seems to be living up to CEO Sam Altman’s statements that the company would give ample notice before retiring GPT-4o.
The vast majority of users rely on GPT-5.2, while only about 0.1% of users select GPT-4o as their daily model, according to the company. The company added that it is confident that the newest models can satisfy the majority of user needs due to recent advancements in model personality customization and creative ideation. OpenAI noted in their blog post that retiring models is never simple. As part of a larger initiative to streamline the chatbot’s model selection and lessen fragmentation, OpenAI has confirmed that GPT-5 Instant and GPT-5 Thinking will be eliminated from ChatGPT in addition to GPT-4o. Additionally, the company has made it clear that these modifications are exclusive to ChatGPT. There is no updates to OpenAI’s API offerings, which means that developers can continue using existing models through the API for now.
