The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday (July 3, 2026) targeted the Congress and its allies, alleging a “dangerous conspiracy to malign Indian democracy” through attempts to delegitimise democratic processes and constitutional institutions, particularly the Election Commission.

Reacting sharply to a letter written by 23 Opposition parties, including the Congress, to the Chief Justice of India, alleging “biased” conduct by the Election Commission and questioning the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process, BJP MP and spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi described the move as an “attack on democracy”.
“The language and tone used in the letter are reminiscent of the arrogant attitude witnessed during the Emergency,” said Mr. Trivedi.
He said the SIR process had already been held to be completely reasonable and lawful by various courts. “From the constitutional point of view, they have failed to place any factual matter before the court,” he said.

“Is it not true that senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor remarked on a television programme that the Congress benefited from SIR in Kerala? In Karnataka, Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar is directing his party workers to participate actively in the SIR process, while you cast aspersions on the very same process,” claimed the BJP leader.
He claimed that the Congress’ electoral setbacks were the result of its lack of effort at the grassroots level and organisational weaknesses, whereas the BJP’s top leaders regularly engaged with party workers on the ground.

Mr. Trivedi also accused the Congress of insulting its own cadre by questioning their loyalty in Gujarat. Referring to West Bengal, he said while Congress workers had been killed in the State and the party’s former State president, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, had said that violence had reached its peak during the Trinamool Congress regime, the Congress continued to stand with former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee “solely for the sake of power”.
“Now, having become increasingly desperate, these defeated factions want to avenge their loss by hoping to see chaos in India,” he alleged.
