Uttarakhand Rainfall: A landslide on the Kedarnath pilgrimage route led to the accumulation of debris and stones on the path, forcing authorities to temporarily regulate movement.

Heavy rain lashed several parts of Uttarakhand, triggering landslides, disrupting traffic and prompting authorities to issue weather alerts across multiple districts, including Dehradun. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) warned of moderate to heavy rainfall in several districts, while incessant rain and falling debris from hillsides affected movement on key roads, including the Badrinath National Highway in Chamoli district and the Kedarnath Yatra route in Rudraprayag district.

A landslide on the Kedarnath pilgrimage route led to the accumulation of debris and stones on the path, forcing authorities to temporarily regulate movement. Personnel from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and local officials were deployed to clear the debris and restore safe passage for pilgrims.

The Kedarnath route, which witnesses thousands of pilgrims during the annual Char Dham Yatra, remains particularly vulnerable to landslides during the monsoon season due to its mountainous terrain and frequent spells of heavy rainfall.

In Chamoli district, traffic on the Badrinath National Highway was also affected after stones and debris fell from unstable hillsides. Road-clearing teams were pressed into service to remove obstructions and ensure connectivity on one of the state’s most important pilgrimage and transport corridors.

The fresh spell of rain has disrupted normal life in several parts of Uttarakhand, with authorities keeping a close watch on rivers, landslide-prone zones and vulnerable settlements.

Amid concerns over monsoon-related disasters, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami reviewed a state-level pre-monsoon mock drill in Dehradun on Thursday and directed officials to strengthen disaster preparedness measures. He stressed the need for rapid response systems, inter-departmental coordination and the use of modern technology to tackle emergencies in the disaster-prone hill state.

“Disaster management is not just an administrative responsibility but one of the state’s top priorities," Dhami said during the review, urging officials to focus on preparedness, risk reduction and rescue operations.

The IMD has cautioned that heavy rainfall may continue in parts of Uttarakhand over the coming days, increasing the risk of landslides, rockfalls and flash floods in hilly regions.

Authorities advised residents and pilgrims travelling to Kedarnath, Badrinath and other Char Dham shrines to monitor weather updates and road conditions before undertaking their journeys.
