More than 31,000 properties registered as Waqf in Uttar Pradesh have been removed from the Centre’s Umeed portal after authorities detected major discrepancies and technical inconsistencies in the submitted records during a large-scale verification exercise.
Officials said the registrations were cancelled following scrutiny of documents linked to the properties, with several claims also being rejected due to mismatches in land and ownership details.
According to officials, registrations of 31,328 Waqf properties recorded on the Umeed portal have been annulled so far.
Of these, Waqf claims related to 31,192 properties were also rejected after verification.
The action forms part of an ongoing review of Waqf records in the state, where a total of 1,18,302 Waqf properties have been documented.
Authorities said the cancellations were triggered after widespread irregularities surfaced during cross-checking of land and revenue records.
In several cases, the Khasra or plot numbers mentioned in the submitted documents did not match the details available in records maintained by the Waqf Board.
Officials also found discrepancies in the land area mentioned in revenue documents, raising questions over the accuracy of the registrations uploaded on the portal.
WHAT DOES UMEED PORTAL DO?
The Umeed portal — Unified Waqf Management, Empowerment, Efficiency and Development — was launched by the Centre as part of a nationwide exercise to digitise and geotag Waqf properties.
The platform aims to create a centralised digital inventory of Waqf assets and improve transparency in their management.
Under the rules, all Waqf properties are required to be uploaded to the portal within six months of its launch.
The development comes amid an ongoing legal and political debate surrounding the amended Waqf law and the mandatory registration process.
Recently, the Supreme Court refused to extend the six-month deadline for uploading property details on the portal, observing that affected parties could seek relief before Waqf Tribunals on a case-by-case basis in case of technical difficulties or documentation issues.
The Centre has maintained that the digitisation exercise is intended to streamline records and prevent misuse of Waqf properties.
With scrutiny continuing across districts, more properties may come under verification in the coming months, while disputed claims are likely to be referred to Waqf Tribunals for further adjudication.
