Hamza Burhan, a key operative linked to the Pakistan-backed terror outfit Al-Badr, who also worked as an Over Ground Worker (OGW) during the Pulwama terror attack period, was killed in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) on Thursday. Several wanted Pakistan-based terrorists, including Syed Salahuddin and Al-Badr chief Bakht Zameen Khan, attended the funeral prayers of the terror commander Hamza Burhan in Islamabad on Friday, according to security sources and visuals circulating on social media.
Hamza Burhan, also known as Arjumand Gulzar Dar and codenamed “Doctor", was linked to the Pakistan-backed terror outfit Al-Badr and was allegedly the mastermind of the 2019 Pulwama terror attack.
He was shot dead by unidentified gunmen in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) on Thursday.
Heavy security at funeral
Visuals from the funeral showed heavily armed terrorists carrying AK-47 rifles and other sophisticated weapons deployed around Bakht Zameen Khan during the gathering.
Officials linked to Pakistan’s ISI were also reportedly seen at the funeral.
The large security deployment highlighted fears of possible attacks amid a recent rise in targeted killings of terrorists in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
Linked to Pulwama attack
Burhan was allegedly one of the masterminds of the 2019 Pulwama terror attack in which more than 40 CRPF personnel were killed.
A resident of Ratnipora in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pulwama district, he later travelled to Pakistan on valid documents and joined the banned Al-Badr outfit.
India’s Union Home Ministry designated him a terrorist in 2022 for involvement in multiple terror activities in Jammu and Kashmir.
Security agencies said he played a major role in radicalising youth, recruiting operatives and arranging terror funding from Pakistan.
Living undercover in PoK
According to officials, Burhan had been living undercover in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in recent years and was working as a teacher.
Police said he was serving as principal of a private college in Muzaffarabad, around 135 kilometres from Islamabad.
Pakistani police said unidentified gunmen attacked him at close range when he stepped out of the college premises on Thursday morning.
“The principal sustained three bullets to the head. He was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition and placed on ventilator support," police officials said.
Sources later confirmed that he died from his injuries.
Suspect arrested
Police claimed one suspect had been arrested and the weapon allegedly used in the attack recovered. Eyewitnesses said the accused tried to flee on a motorcycle but was caught by locals and handed over to police.
Burhan’s death adds to a growing list of designated terrorists and extremist operatives killed under mysterious circumstances in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in recent years.
Terror links under spotlight
The funeral gathering once again brought attention to allegations that Pakistan shelters globally wanted terrorists.
Over a month ago, a close aide of Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif was seen sharing a stage with Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorist Hafiz Talha Saeed, son of 26/11 mastermind Hafiz Saeed.
Last year, several senior Pakistani military officers also attended funerals of terrorists killed during Operation Sindoor strikes, highlighting what critics describe as a continuing military-terror nexus in Pakistan.
