Pakistan has reached out to China to bolster its mediation efforts between the United States and Iran, amid growing scepticism in Tehran over Islamabad’s ability to act as a credible guarantor, top diplomatic sources told CNN-News18.
According to the sources, a six-point “in-principle" framework is currently under consideration, designed to address Iran’s key demands and provide longer-term guarantees that could help revive stalled negotiations. The framework, sources said, has been prepared in consultation with Beijing and may serve as a starting point for renewed talks between Washington and Tehran.
Why Pakistan Is Bringing China On Board
The move comes against the backdrop of a widening trust deficit between Iran and Pakistan. Iranian negotiators are reluctant to rely solely on Islamabad and have pushed for China’s involvement to ensure stronger, more durable assurances.
Tehran wants concrete guarantees that will hold over time. China is seen as better placed to provide that, a top diplomatic source said.
China’s inclusion is also being viewed as a strategic necessity. With Beijing maintaining close ties with Tehran and significant stakes in regional stability, its presence could lend credibility to any proposed arrangement.
What Is The Six-Point Framework?
While the full details remain undisclosed, sources confirmed that the six-point agenda has been shared informally with all sides, including Iran. Pakistan and China are said to be jointly refining the draft, which could be presented as a broad framework for negotiations rather than a final deal.
The idea is to create an acceptable base for both the United States and Iran to restart structured talks.
China’s Strategic Interest In De-escalation
China’s involvement is not just diplomatic but also driven by economic concerns. Sources said Beijing has been significantly impacted by the ongoing tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, where disruptions and a de facto US naval blockade have affected energy flows.
Pakistan’s Multi-Track Outreach
Pakistan, for its part, has been maintaining active communication with key stakeholders across capitals, including Tehran, Washington, Beijing and Riyadh. Officials believe that aligning these interests could improve the chances of a breakthrough.
Islamabad is positioning itself as a central conduit in the diplomatic process, though its effectiveness has been questioned in recent weeks following setbacks in earlier rounds of engagement.
Breakthrough On The Horizon?
Despite the challenges, sources expressed cautious optimism, suggesting that a major breakthrough in US-Iran talks could be possible if the proposed framework gains traction.
