Pakistan on Monday claimed that Iran had urged Islamabad’s top leadership to continue mediating between Tehran and Washington, even as Iranian officials maintain that negotiations with the United States have been suspended following Israeli military escalation in Lebanon.

The contradiction emerged hours after Iran announced it was halting indirect exchanges with the US through mediators, arguing that Israeli attacks in Lebanon amounted to a violation of the broader ceasefire framework that Tehran says extends beyond Iran’s borders.

According to sources, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, during talks with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and Field Marshal Asim Munir, sought Islamabad’s continued support in de-escalation efforts and maintaining the ceasefire.

During the discussions, both expressed “serious concerns" over the ceasefire violations by Israel in Lebanon, the sources said.

This comes hours after Iran suspended exchanges with the United States through mediators, according to Iranian state media, as tensions escalate over Israel’s widening military operations in Lebanon.

Iran’s Tasnim news agency reported that Tehran’s negotiating team had halted the exchange of messages and documents with the US via intermediaries, citing continued Israeli military activity in Lebanon.

The agency said Iran would not resume talks unless what it called as the withdrawal of Israeli forces from occupied areas and an end to operations in Gaza and Lebanon were met.

Meanwhile, Iran’s Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters on Monday issued an evacuation notice for residents in northern Israel and its military settlements, should Israel go through with its threats to bomb southern Beirut under the pretext of targeting Hezbollah, The New Region reported.

Besides, Egypt Minister of Foreign Affairs is Badr Abdelatty held a telephonic conversation with his Pakistani counterpart to discuss the need for regional stability. Both agreed to maintain diplomatic engagement to promote peace.
