Former Pakistan prime minister and Pakistan Peoples Party leader Raja Pervez Ashraf on Wednesday denied any links to alleged drug suspect Anmol alias Pinky after a viral court appearance video purportedly showed her mentioning his name.

Addressing Pakistan’s National Assembly, Ashraf said he was “shocked" after the clip surfaced on social media and maintained that he had led a “spotless life". He also said he was willing to face any investigation into the matter.

The controversy erupted after a video recorded during Pinky’s recent court appearance circulated online, in which she could allegedly be heard saying “Raja Pervez" before her voice was drowned out by police officials escorting her.

Ashraf told the Assembly that another clip later emerged in which the suspect’s lawyer claimed she was being pressured to name certain politicians. Dawn reported that Pinky had also alleged during a May 18 court hearing that she was under pressure “to take names".

“When I heard the name, I thought perhaps it was another Raja Pervez Ashraf," the PPP leader said, adding that social media users and vloggers began discussing the matter soon after the video went viral.

Ashraf said his family, party colleagues and even political opponents had supported him publicly following the allegations. He further urged authorities to put safeguards in place against “media trials" before the completion of investigations and stressed that individuals should be presumed innocent until proven guilty through due process.

Pakistan’s National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq later asked Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar to respond to the issue and questioned whether cybercrime authorities should act against what he described as false propaganda online.
